Akumal is a small town in Riviera Maya, located 30 min drive from Playa del Carmen and 25 min drive from Tulum. It is a natural area that preserves one of the nicest beaches in the zone, where ecoliving and ecotourism is present in every accommodation.
Located at the top right of the Yucatán peninsula, in the Mexican Caribbean, the city awaits you. It has its own International Airport, only 5 km away from downtown.
If you come to Akumal you are seeking the authenticity of an in-the-nature experience, and it was born as a small coconut community and it has kept its small size-village since the area is surrounded by cenotes. If you are interested in fresh crystalline waters you must visit the Yal Ku Lagoon, a wide lagoon mixt with salty and fresh water that has a unique ecosystem of sea & cenote fish.
The name Akumal is the Mayan name that means “turtle place”. And just as you thought, it is because there are sea turtles coming every season to nest in the beaches in Akumal. However, they were so pleased with the area that oddly they started living there all year long. ¡So when you come to Akumal you can actually swim with sea turtles! Also, the coral reef is really close by, so it is a great tour for people of all ages.
We must advise you that the area is eco-friendly, so please understand they are life animals and they might be used to humans but we must respect them and their environment. No sunblock or any product is to be used before entering the water.
