The location everyone is talking about, the wonderful Bacalar and its marvelous 7 colors lagoon. It is a quiet “pueblo mágico”, a distinction for the nicest and unique towns around Mexico. Here you rapidly sense the international & smooth vibe to just enjoy everything around. Come and count all the shades of blue water, don’t just take the popular word for it.
Located at the top right of the Yucatán peninsula, in the Mexican Caribbean, the city awaits you. It has its own International Airport, only 5 km away from downtown.
When visiting Bacalar you must take a tour around the lagoon. Possibilities are endless, from a private sailing boat to shared snorkeling tours, kayaking, paddle surf… Almost any water-related activity is available. But respect the environment. In the water live the Earth’s oldest living lifeforms, the stromatolites. They are clusters of cells that take the shape of rocks, technically living rocks, that play an essential role in bringing life to our planet.
Another must-do activity is to walk across the town in the nice arranged streets and the St Philip Fort, one of the unique defending buildings to protect the mayan population from the pirates. You can visit the museum and walk all over the walls, very recommended to have a nice view from downtown and the lagoon.
In the area you will reach Chetumal in a short 40-minute drive, you can visit the bird’s island where countless migration birds nest or rest from their tireless travel. This is a cenote area, so you can refresh yourself in the fresh underground caves such as Cenote Azul, the Cenote Negro or Witch Cenote (dark misty stories involved here). Another option is to visit adjacent lagoons like Xul-ha.
Bacalar is one of this places where stories born. Pirates of the Caribbean, mighty creatures, powerful witchcraft… So be prepared for the unknown in your next visit to Bacalar. Nothing scary, just watch out with the aluxes living around.
